When I was asked to test a natural deodorant by Schmidt's I immediately jumped to the opportunity. I've been changing my makeup and skincare to mostly organic and cruelty-free over the years, but somehow I was always postponing my deodorant to a natural one. I'm a very active girl. I love to workout and really need to be able to rely on my deodorant. On my travels to the U.S., the first thing I do is run into a drugstore and get my supply of antiperspirants. But then again I also know about all the nasties they put in those deodorants. Time for a change and let's try out those naturals!
The natural deodorant I'm testing for this blog is a Ylang-Ylang + Calendula and the Charcoal + Magnesium from Schmidt's. It helps to neutralize odor and it absorbs wetness. The main ingredients are arrowroot powder, baking soda, coconut oil, shea butter, wax, and Candelilla. No nasties and just natural fragrance. The deodorant comes in a comfortable stick and costs $8.99
I was very reluctant to finally start testing my natural deodorant, but I knew I had to start someday. So today is the day. The current weather is very close to a heatwave and I have absolutely no idea if this deodorant will get me through the day. After my morning shower, I applied it and it's not very different than my others sticks. It feels a bit heavier to apply that's all. The Ylang Ylang smell is delicious! So far so good. Checking my armpits every second, but nothing happened. I stayed dry throughout the day and that lovely smell didn't seem to faint. Even after a short bike ride to the supermarket, nothing happened.
Today I'm working from my office which is a 10-minute bike ride away. Current temperatures 27C/80F. The deodorant got me safe to the office and I'm spending the rest of the day in the airco. I even forget I'm testing a natural deodorant after a while. The only thing that brings me outside again is an evening photo shoot for about half an hour. Again no complaints at all.
day 3 – the workout test
Today is my workout day and now I can really see if this deodorant is working for me. Let's put it to the test! After a 10 minute cardio on the stair machine, I'm sweating like a maniac. And my underarms? They are really getting moist and I can see small spots appearing in my shirt. After my cardio, I work with weights for another 45 minutes. My underarms are dry again but the moist parts in my t-shirt stay not making me feel really comfortable. The gorgeous smell of Ylang Ylang is still there. After my workout I cycle home, take a shower and reapply the deodorant again. The rest of the day I'll be working on the blog and making some pictures, but mostly inside. My armpits are getting more sensitive though.
Unfortunately I have to stop using the Ylang-Ylang as my armpits have developed a nasty rash. I'm very disappointed as I was really getting used to this one. Bummer.
After 2 days of rest I decided to continue my natural deodorant experience with the Charcoal + Magnesium stick. This one also contains the arrow root powder and the baking powder but less fragrance, so let's see what happens. The stick is easier to apply, but the smell isn't as good as the Ylang Ylang one. It keeps me dry throughout the day even is this non stop heatwave which is simply great. It's doing it's job, but I'm missing the love I felt for the first stick.
- no aluminum
- no propylene glycol
- no artificial fragrance
- great smell
- certified vegan
- not suitable for heavy workout
- increased rash break out risk
Should you try to go natural on your deodorant? Yes! Especially if you are looking for a vegan, cruelty-free and no aluminum version you simply have to switch. And yes I'm a fan too! I was surprised by the dryness it gave me. BUT…Look for a deodorant without the baking soda in it or with a lower percentage. It can be to heavy for your armpits. Looking for the one that suits you is simply a quest of trial and error and I know I will be testing a lot more deodorants too.
The Schmidt's deodorants come in more fragrances: Rose-Vanilla, Lavander-Sage, Bergamot-Lime and the latest addition Waves to name a few! If you are just starting out with natural deodorant I would suggest trying one from the sensitive collection.
What about you? Did you try natural deodorant already? Which brands are you using? Did you experience nasty and burning armpits? Drop me a note and let me know!
